National Group Reports

As well as the regular Area Group meetings that take place, regular national meetings are held around the country.

Don’t forget that local area groups also hold meetings, sometimes every month. Visit the Area Groups pages to find out if there’s a group near you!

Annual General Meeting, Rolleston on Dove, Staffordshire, 13 June 2009

Words and photos by Heather Kavanagh

A welcome return to the Group’s old stomping ground of the Scout Hall in Rolleston for this year’s AGM saw a rather lacklustre turnout by the membership. Indeed, at one point there was worry that a quorum wouldn’t materialise—which would be a disaster for the main proceedings of the day.

Thankfully, the numbers grew steadily to reach just over 30 in total. Not the greatest turnout we’ve ever had, it has to be said, so I think it’s only fair to thank Peter Drost and John Day for making the effort from South Wales and Devon, respectively, and Nigel Tuck, who made the journey from Durham in his wheelchair.

Peter Mann and team had brought a large section of Croscombe Magna to provide running facilities, while Len Newman, Laurie Griffin and Peter Hunt supported with their sales stands. Your correspondent spent much of the day pointing her camera at things, some of which you can see below.

IMG1032MG7348As to the AGM business, three members of the Committee were stepping down this year. A new Chairman, Eldred Clark, Secretary, Rob Thompson, and Ordinary Member, Dave Nicholson, were elected by the meeting. The remainder of the Committee members were happy to remain in harness for a further year. John Day, Treasurer, has served for 12 years, and reminded the meeting he intended on retiring at the 2010 AGM.

Eldred was unable to attend the meeting, due to a conveniently scheduled family birthday. Despite this, he had arranged with Rob to present his vision for the future of the S7 Group.

Eldred and Rob are both keen to move the Group forward by making better ties with other scale societies and manufacturers. Openness was the key, and both Rob and Eldred were keen for members to talk to them and the rest of the Committee. Getting the Wheels Project moving was also important, as well as communicating the standards behind ScaleSeven to the wider world. Eldred wanted new members to feel it was important to remain within the Group, and asked for ideas on how retention could be improved. The overall message was that the foundations forged by the previous Committee were sound, and it was time to start building for the future.

The date of the next AGM is to be confirmed, but it is hoped it will be held at the Warley Model Railway Club’s rooms near Birmingam.
