Further information about the 2015 wagon building competition

Newsletter no. 99 announced another wagon building competition to be judged at the forthcoming AGM (to be held at the Warley MRC on 20th June 2015). The announcement of the current competition made note of some organisation matters which required further consideration. This newsletter contribution is to provide further information for those who are intending or considering entering the competition. At the time of publication of the last newsletter the competition details to be confirmed were:-

  1. the size/format of the label to accompany an entry
  2. the judge of the competition;
  3. the award to be presented to the winner of the competition.

Details of a competition entry

Each entry into the wagon building competition shall be accompanied by two identical labels (no bigger than A6 in size) which provide information about the model for the guidance of the Judge and for the interest of members. As a minimum, the description of an entry shall include:-

  1. confirmation that the entry is to S7 standards;
  2. prototype information - builder (and owning company if different), period in use, type/use of wagon;
  3. model information - kit manufacturer, alterations/changes to kit, painting/lettering/weathering;
  4. sufficient space for the S7 Group to include an "entry number" - this is the means by which entries shall be referenced during judging and for security purposes (see below). An area to the bottom right hand corner is suggested, say one inch square.

The Judge

The Committee has two potential Judges in mind and both are known for their support of railway modelling in general and 7mm modelling in particular - whilst the identity of the Judge is to be confirmed be assured that either of the potential candidates is worthy of the task.

The Judge of the competition shall not have knowledge of the owner/builder of a wagon and shall make the selection of the winner by reference to the "entry number" on the descriptive label for the winning entry.

The Award

The Committee has agreed that the award for the winner of the Wagon Building Competition is to be known as "The Chairman's Shield" and engraved with the name of the winner(s). The Chairman's Shield will be awarded on an annual basis (yes - there is going to be another competition in 2016 and in 2017and 2018).  Each winner of The Chairman's Shield shall receive a smaller award to be retained indefinitely.

Security of entries

In order that entries are taken away only by the owner, the Committee intends to implement security measures; those measures are likely to include the owner's signature (on one of the descriptive labels which accompany an entry). An owner of an entry reclaims the entry after judging by providing a further signature for comparison with that provided when the wagon is entered into the competition. All entries are to be held in a locked showcase until judging commences.
