West Sussex Area Group Report February 2018

I last wrote an update on progress within this Group some two years ago (NL103) so first an apology for the delay! To avoid any confusion, I should start by recording that we decided to change our name from South Coast Group to West Sussex Group principally to help clarify where we are located. 

We have undertaken a refurbishment of our Group circular test track which included raising the height of the twenty tables giving far better viewing both at our meetings and at exhibitions. The next stage, now underway, has been to remove the Scale7 trackwork built some six years ago using copper clad sleepers and replacement with ‘proper’ permanent way built with chairs and code 125 rail etc. As well as improving the appearance of the track the opportunity has been taken to increase the track radius and incorporate a passing loop which should allow larger locomotives to operate and increase operational interest. DCC or analogue operation is allowed for as before. 

Our Group includes fine scale as well as Scale7 members and I think I can say that we get on well together with any comments regarding gauge being restricted to those of a humorous nature. Scale7 regulars include Ian Norman who, in addition to building his layout Shingle Street (NL 108), brings a selection of Eastern region stock to operate on the test track as does Robert Wigley but in this case motive power is inspired by the South Western. Julian Russell is moving ahead (slowly) with his model of Great Malvern station (NL 103) that will host many GW types and some LMS stock; scenery work is to start soon including the listed station buildings.
