The 2018 Wagon Building Competition

The subject of the 2018 competition, as announced at the 2017 AGM, is a tank wagon which is or was used for carrying crude oil or the products produced by the refining of crude oil. Generically, such wagons are often referred to as “Class A” or “Class B” tanks.

For the 2018 competition there are relaxations in some of the subject rules. An eligible entry shall conform to the following:

  • the entry shall be submitted by a person who is a member of the S7 Group at the date of the competition, that is:- the date of the appropriate AGM
  • the entry shall be a 7mm scale model of a prototype tank wagon (for inclusions/ exclusions see below)
  • there is no constraint on the number of wheels or the wheelbase of the prototype wagon
  • there is no constraint on the gauge of the prototype wagon or the country in which the wagon operates/ operated
  • the entry shall be built to S7 standards
  • the entry shall be accompanied by a description of the prototype and of the model (to include manufacturer/medium/ upgrades) together with notes on construction/modifications. Prototypes which are eligible for the 2018 competition include
  • wagons for the conveyance of crude oil
  • wagons for the conveyance of the products of refining of crude oil, for example:- petroleum, diesel, kerosene, paraffin, aviation spirit, lubricating oil.

Prototypes which are not eligible for the 2018 competition include:

  • wagons for the conveyance of food products
  • wagons for the conveyance of dry powders
  • wagons for the conveyance of liquids/ gases other than those which result from refining of crude oil.

    • As the intention of the Wagon Building Competition is to encourage construction of models from kits then a model which is based upon a Ready-to-Run wagon is eligible only where the ready-to-run model has been modified in some manner other than a change of livery or identity.

    Administration for the 2018 competitions will follow generally the precedents set by previous competitions. Please contact either me or Rob Thompson if you have any question about the rules, the eligibility of an entry or administration of the competition.

    Time for something different?

    Discussion at the AGM demonstrated a desire for the Wagon Building Competition to be open to those whose preference is to scratch build models. That desire is in conflict with the original aim of the wagon competition to encourage new S7 modellers to build models from kits. Accordingly the S7 Group Committee has decided that for and from 2018 the annual wagon building competition shall have two classes, that is: Class ‘A’ for models based upon kits or RTR products and Class 'B' for models built from scratch.

    So one subject and two parallel competitions with one judge; two results, two winners and two awards. The competition for kit-built / modified RTR wagons will continue to be known as the Chairman’s Cup - and yes, the trophy is still a shield. The name and trophy for the scratch-built wagon competition is still in discussion by the committee.
